Students in Grade 4-6 may visit the library for books every morning before school from 8:40-8:50 a.m. and/or during the school day with permission from their teacher.
About Check Out & Return
Each student may take up to three (3) items home at a time. Materials are due back each week, but may be renewed. We ask that items be returned in a timely fashion so that others may enjoy them. Students working on specific assignments may request additional books and extended due dates as required.
Lost Items In case of a lost item, please first double check at home. Books frequently show up under beds, in closets, between furniture, under car seats, and mixed in with home libraries. Keep an eye out for a white label with black print on the spine and a Remsenburg-Speonk barcode on the top right corner of the back cover. Feel free to call or write a note so that we may check the library and student's classroom. If desired, the librarian can mark the book as "lost" so that the student may continue to take home additional books. If the item is still missing after our annual library inventory in June, a replacement fee will be charged at that time.
Reading Level System
To help students in their quest to find “just right books,” each book has been labeled with a colored dot representing grade level bands according to the table below. This is intended not to limit your child’s reading, but as a guidance tool much like the “Five Finger Rule.” Students may still choose to take out challenge, comfortable, and easy books. The grade level determinations were based on the Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading System via theLiteracy Leveler App, Scholastic Book Wizard App, and other library databases. When the F&P data were not available, books were leveled using Lexiles and/or other systems. Sometimes different sources will provide different assessments of readability. Moreover, reading is a complex process. Children develop at different rates and their ability to successfully read a book is influenced by their interest, background knowledge, life experiences, and more. Again, the grade level bands are simply a tool to assist in choosing a book for those who want it.
